Helix Mattress Review Overview

Helix gained notoriety because it was one of very first online mattress manufacturers to offer fully customizable mattresses, which include mattresses that have two distinct constructions on each side to accommodate couples with different sleeping preferences. While the company recently slashed its customized products, it is still dedicated to providing a wide selection of mattresses for sleepers.

Helix now has six hybrid mattresses in its collection that have a distinct quality of plushness and hardness. This is a list of the people who are most likely to be sleeping on these mattresses (and who might not).

Who Might Like the Helix Mattresses?

  • Those who sleep hot and require an airy mattress
  • People who require a large selection of options to choose from

Who Might Not Like the Helix Mattresses?

  • Those who choose an alternative mattress that’s not a hybrid
  • People who do not need or require coil support

Which Helix Mattress Should You Get?

Helix’s six main models cover a wide range of firmnesses. This gives you plenty of options to find the right size. (You can change one of these models to an LUXE model as well. Helix also offers a mattress that is specifically made for people who are heavy, called The Helix Plus.) Here’s a quick overview of how the main models stack up in terms of their suitability to various sleeping positions.

Helix Mattress Firmness and Feel

You might have noticed that stiffness was already mentioned in this roundup. That’s because one of the most important aspects to think about when purchasing a new mattress is firmness (and how firmness affects comfort). These elements will reveal a lot about a mattress’s suitability for your chosen bed location (s). Let’s take a closer look at the firmness and feel in the Helix mattress collection.

What Is the Firmness of Helix Mattresses?

The Helix mattresses come in a range of different hardness choices, with the softer being moderately soft and the most firm ones being moderately firm. Its Helix Sunset is on the softer end of the range We gave it a hardness rating of 5.5 out of 10 on the scale of firmness. (A 6.5/10 would be the industry standard for medium firmness.) Helix Dusk is next. Helix Midnight is next, and we gave it a 6/10 that means it’s softer than normal. It’s softer than the Helix Midnight, as well as Helix Dusk sit somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. Both of these mattresses received a rating of around 7/10, which is a bit more firm than the average. The Helix Twilight, as well as Helix Dawn are at the harder end of the spectrum, both receiving a 7.5/10 assessment (firmer than average).

It’s important to keep in mind that the level of hardness is a matter of personal preference. When it comes to the firmness of the mattress, you can rate these mattresses differently depending on your body weight and personal preferences. People who are heavier, for instance could find the mattresses more firm as they can push further into the mattress and get to the support layers. However, those who are lighter may discover that these mattresses are more supple due to their position in the comfort layer of every bed(s).

Sleeping on the Helix Mattresses

We slept on Helix mattresses for a lengthy time to get a clear picture of what it’s like rest on each model in different positions. Check out the results!

Helix Sunset Mattress

Helix Mattress Sleep QuizDue to its softness due to its softness, the Helix Sunset was not sufficient for back sleepers. The hips of ours sink a little too far down into our mattress causing the spine to be misaligned.

While the Helix Sunset’s softness isn’t ideal for those who sleep on their backs, it’s ideal for those who sleep on their sides. We felt very relaxed in this position as the soft mattress cushioned possible tension points in the hip and shoulder. It’s actually one of the most comfortable mattresses to relieve hip discomfort we’ve seen.

The Helix Sunset is not supportive enough for stomach sleep due it is soft. Our hips fell too far into the mattress and pulled the spinal column out of its alignment just the way they did when were back sleeping.

Helix Moonlight Mattress

helix-moonlightWhile back sleeping while sleeping, it was apparent that the Helix Moonlight was adequate but not exceptional. If you’re planning on sleeping in this position all night, you’ll almost certainly need a more firm mattress that provides more support and assists in maintaining appropriate spinal alignment.

It is the Helix Moonlight is an excellent option for sleeping on the side because of its comfort. There was no unwelcome pressure on the hips or shoulders.

The Helix Moonlight, like the Helix Sunset, isn’t supportive enough for stomach sleeping. Our hips fell too deeply in the mattress causing the spine to shift.

Helix Midnight Mattress

Helix Midnight Luxe FeatureAs we slept on the Helix Midnight and feeling fantastic, we were able to feel great. We felt a little pressure alleviation without sacrificing spinal alignment , thanks to the mattress’s great balance of support and comfort. It’s the best mattress for back sleepers that we have reviewed on this list.

Despite the fact that the Helix Midnight is more firm than it’s counterparts, the Helix Sunset or Moonlight and Moonlight, we were able to rest comfortably on our backs on this mattress. It is a good pressure-relief mattress around the shoulder and hip, in our opinion.

As we lay on our stomachs in the Helix Midnight, we felt well, but not super. Sleepers who are in this position all night should look for mattresses that are firmer and provide more spinal support.

Helix Dusk Mattress

helix-duskIt’s the Helix Dusk is more supportive than other mattresses we’ve tested, which may explain why we felt so good while resting upon our backs. We’re sure that we’ll be able to maintain proper spinal alignment all night thanks to the mattress’s supportive nature.

It’s likely not a surprise to find that Helix Dusk feels a little too firm for side sleeping since we’ve shifted to the firmer side on the scale. We noticed some pressure on the shoulder and hip, which would definitely cause significant discomfort if you were to sleep in this position for the entire night.

The Helix Dusk should suit stomach sleepers of average weight since it can help to maintain a healthy spine alignment. However, stomach sleepers who are heavier may not find sufficient support.

Helix Twilight Mattress

helix-twilightThe Helix Twilight was proved to be the greatest bed for back discomfort. It’s ideal for back sleepers who require extra support due to increased weight back pain, other causes. The firmer construction of this mattress helps in keeping hips lifted and aligned in alignment with spine.

Because it is the case that Helix Twilight is slightly firmer than other mattresses, we found it difficult to lie on our backs on the mattress. We felt suffocated in the shoulders and hips.

The majority of stomach sleepers will find the Helix Twilight to be a good one, as the mattress’s firmness should offer enough support to the spine in this position.

Helix Dawn Mattress

helix-dawnBack sleepers who like mattresses that are firm will appreciate the Helix Dawn’s high level of support. However, those who like an occasional relief from pressure when lying back may likely find this mattress too firm.

It’s the Helix Dawn is far too hard to be used for sleeping on your side and you’ll end up with lots of pressure points around your hip and shoulder. The Helix Dawn that is soft will be considerably better for sleepers who prefer side sleeping.

The Helix Dawn mattress is considered to be the best mattresses for stomach-sleepers, in our opinion. Throughout the night, this firm and supportive mattress helps keep the hips elevated and in alignment with the spine.

What Do the Helix Mattresses Feel Like?

Helix mattresses all have a hybrid composition with foam layered over coils. Despite these similarities, each model has its own distinctive character.

The Helix Sunset offers a soft top with a balanced foam feel. The comfort layer’s plushness encourages sleepers to feel comfortable and provides the mattress with an elongated feel.

It is worth noting that the Helix Moonlight, despite its softness, has a bouncy sensation, especially when contrasted to the Sunset, which is less sensitive.

The Helix Midnight similar to Helix Sunset, like Helix Sunset, has a balanced feel and a slow-moving top layer. The Midnight is a bit more firm than the Sunset, allowing sleepers to sink a little deeper down into the layer above.

The Helix Dusk is solid and bouncy. This is because of the use of high-performance foam in the top layer and coils in the supporting layer.

The Helix Twilight, like the Helix Sunset and Midnight, features a slower-moving top. It’s still a solid mattress, with the comfort layer being slightly more comfortable.

Helix Dawn, like the Helix Dawn, like the Helix Dusk, has a soft, firm and bouncy feel it because to the use of foam that is dynamic (in the layer of comfort) and coils (in the support layer).

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs

It is the Helix Midnight (which combines spinal support with pressure reduction) as well as the Helix Dusk are likely to be preferred by back sleepers (which offers firmer spinal support).

Sleeping on the Helix Late at Night (if your preference is a slightly more spongy feeling) or the more comfortable and more pressure-reducing Helix Moonlight or Sunset is more likely for side sleepers of average weight.

For stomach sleepers, those with a moderate weight should choose the supportive Helix Twilight or Dawn.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs

The Helix Dusk should provide appropriate support for back sleepers who weigh a lot, as it relieves tension while ensuring the alignment of the spine.

The most soft models of the Helix range, such as the Helix Moonlight or Helix Sunset will provide enough pressure relief for heavyweight side sleepers.

Heavyweight stomach sleepers however tend to go to the Helix Dawn (the firmest mattress of the range) to ensure proper spinal support.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs

There should be a variety of options for light back sleepers. The Helix Moonlight, Midnight, and Dusk all provide plenty of support for the spine and various levels of pressure relief to accommodate different sleeping styles.

Similar to the side sleepers that are lightweight, you can select from Helix Midnight, Moonlight, or Sunset and should provide adequate pressure relief with the ability to alter the level of hardness to suit their preferences.

Finally, stomach sleepers will find that the Helix Twilight or Dawn for the best supportive.

Helix Mattresses Construction

In terms of construction, all of Helix mattresses are constructed in the same way. Helix mattresses are constructed in the same manner: They have the same cover, and the same foam comfort layers are placed over individual wrapped supports for coils.

Every Helix mattresses, including the newest models, come with a SoftTouch Design cover that is soft, elastic, and breathable. This design allows air to flow freely across the top of the mattress. Meanwhile, each Helix model is equipped with an additional layer of support made of individually wrapped coils stacked on top of a base foam with a high density which gives the mattress its overall structure and strength.

The similarities stop there for the most part. The comfort layers of these mattresses differ in the thickness, stiffness, arrangement, and types of foam. Other materials are available in certain models. Let’s take a take a closer look!.

Helix Sunset

The Helix Sunset’s comfort layer is made of pressure-reducing Memory Plus Foam, which gives you the slow-moving feeling which memory foam has become known for. A layer of transition made up of Helix Dynamic foam, a latex-foam substitute that’s a bit larger, more bouncier, and more bolstering, sits under memory Plus Foam.

Helix Moonlight

The Helix Sunset’s comfort layer is made out of Memory Plus Foam, the Helix Midnight’s main comfort layer and the transition layer are made of Helix’s Dynamic Foam. It is a different latex-foam alternative and the numerous layers of this foam gives it a buoyant feel when compared with that of the Helix Sunset.

Helix Midnight

Memory Plus Foam is the principal comfort layer of the Helix Midnight, and it helps reduce pressure and body shaping. A layer of transitional high-quality polyfoam lies under it. Memory Plus Foam. This layer is very flexible, meaning that the mattress overall responds more quickly to pressure.

Helix Dusk

The Helix Dusk’s primary comfort layer is made up of Helix Dynamic Foam, a latex-foam replacement that’s soft and receptive. It’s a layer of Memory Plus Foam sits beneath this layer. (Think about the Dusk’s structure as being identical to that from that of the Helix Sunset, but reversed.) Helix Dynamic Foam has been placed over Memory Plus Foam to create a bouncy, responsive surface, while Memory Plus Foam helps relieve pressure as sleepers sink into the mattress.

Helix Twilight

The Helix Twilight, like the Helix Midnight, has a slow-moving Memory Plus Foam layer above a dense, high-grade polyfoam layer that acts as a transition. This Memory Plus Foam adds some convenience, but don’t get deceived by this being a mattress that is firm with very only a little bounce.

Helix Dawn

Not to be left out The Helix Dawn has the Helix Dynamic Foam comfort layer, which is sandwiched over a thick, high-quality polyfoam layer transition layer. This combination produces a firm, bouncy, and responsive sleep surface with very little give.

Helix Mattresses Performance

We put our Helix mattresses through a set of tests to see the performance of these mattresses in key areas like the regulation of temperature and edge support, motion transfer, and more. Read on to learn what they did!

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Are you sleeping hot or cold? If you’re concerned about overheating, consider purchasing a LUXE model of any mattress.

Motion Transfer

Based on our testing that some mattresses outperform others when it comes to minimising disturbances to the mattress’s surface. The Helix Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight provided the best motion isolation. This is due there is a slower-moving memory foam close to the top of each of the models, it does well at absorbing motion. These are among the most comfortable mattresses for couples on the market.

Edge Support

Every Helix mattress offered good edge support throughout the range. When we sat and slept on the edges of each mattress, we felt secure.

Durability

The Helix mattresses are manufactured with strong coils and high-density foams which ensure that they can endure a long time.

Off-Gassing

We did notice some off-gassing from all six Helix mattresses at first. It will disappear within a couple of days or perhaps sooner.

Noise

There was no noticeable sound when moving around on the mattresses at the time of our review. However, because all of them have coils, it’s likely that they’ll begin to squeak over time.

Sex

When searching for a sex mattress, most individuals are concerned about how simple it is to change places on their mattress. Because all of the Helix mattresses feature coils, they must be flexible enough to let you move around easily on any of them. The models that have memory foam in the top layer (particularly, the Helix Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight) might make changing positions more difficult because of their slower movement.

Information on the Warranty

A 100-night sleep trial and 10 years of mattress warranty are included with every Helix mattress.

Which is the best mattress?

The short answer is that there isn’t any one type of mattress. Why? Because everybody is different and the best mattress that is right for you will depend on your body type, wellbeing and the way you sleep. Secondly, it’s because the differences between each type of mattress are becoming less noticeable. The technology has advanced so dramatically in the past five years that it’s hard to notice any perceptible difference when you’re sleeping on them.

It’s a great thing: it means you should be able to choose one of the mattresses in our top mattress guide and be content no matter if it’s constructed of copper-infused memory foam coils, cooling, or a cutting-edge blend of all-natural materials.

However, it can be helpful to know what each mattress type is prior to making the final decision. With this in mind, here’s a look at the primary options, and highlight the main differences between them… Helix Mattress Sleep Quiz

Memory foam mattress

The Nectar Memory Foam mattress has three-inches of gel memory foam. Memory foam is a fantastic alternative for those who prefer to feel “hugged” by their mattress. It conforms to your body and provides greater pressure relief than springs, and is excellent in taking in the motion. This is the reason alone makes it an ideal option for people who share the bed with an anxious partner (but not the best option for those who prefer a bit of bounce on your mattress, you’ll need an innerspring or hybrid instead).

The main benefit that memory foam has is that it allows you to get sunk into it. This is why it provides above-average cushioning. Similar to any mattress made of all foam the material is dense and can be warmer in the night than other options. However, the top memory foam mattresses are now equipped with cooling components that are designed to regulate your temperature during sleep. Helix Mattress Sleep Quiz

Innerspring mattress

Saatva’s flagship innerspring mattress, the Saatva Classic, is available in three different levels of firmness. (Image image credit: Saatva) Innerspring mattress utilize a coil-based support system to provide comfort and structure. The size, quantity and style of the coils can vary and whereas traditionally, innerspring mattresses were made with interconnected coils, the term is increasingly used for mattresses made of pocket springs.

They are made up of individually wrapped coils that are placed inside their own fabric pocket and are able to move independently, providing improved pressure relief, more comfort and more effective motion isolation. In general, the more pocket springs in a mattress, the better support. You can also use one of the best mattress toppers to instantly add an additional layer of comfort and support.

One key difference between all-foam mattresses and innerspring options is that they’re buoyant. they allow you to sleep in them, instead of sinking into them. That’s good news for hot sleepers, as this means that your body heat won’t be trapped in the mattress, plus the springs let the air more to move than thick foam. They also offer more bounce than all-foam options, and can be cheaper. Helix Mattress Sleep Quiz

Hybrid mattresses

Hybrids like Dreamcloud bring you the best of both worlds: you get the customized comfort of memory foam gel or latex and also enjoy the soft bounce and enhanced airflow of springs. The coils in hybrid mattresses are typically smaller than the ones in traditional mattresses, and they usually (but often not) have a thicker layers of memory foam.

Many of the best mattresses are hybrid. They’re a flexible option that make a good compromise for couples with different sleeping preferences. They’re also a good choice for hot sleepers who appreciate the comfort of foam. Helix Mattress Sleep Quiz

Latex mattresses

Plushbeds is made from GOLS organic-certified latex from the co-owned farms of the company’s collectives. Latex mattresses are made of a highly robust latex foam that is made of natural materials, not synthetic materials (which the memory foam mattresses constructed from). If you are looking for an organic and ecological mattress, then latex is the ideal mattress material.

It isn’t as dense as memory foam, making latex mattresses less prone to overheating. Latex also offers good bounce and contouring. Additionally, the superb endurance makes it a great investment if you want your mattress to last, but it doesn’t come inexpensive! Helix Mattress Sleep Quiz

How can I determine the correct mattress size?

A good rule of thumb for selecting the correct size mattress is to make sure it’s at least 10cm higher than the person who is tallest on it. In terms of width, if you share the bed, you and your partner must be able to lay your hands on your head, without elbows touching. If you’re sleeping on your own and you’re not sharing a bed, you’ll be able to get the size mattress if it’s possible to place your hands beneath your head and not touch the edges of the mattress. So measure that distance and when you pick the mattress that’s larger than the measurement, you’ll be good.

Most of the options listed in our top mattress reviews are in twin full, twin, queen, king and California king sizes. Some are available in split versions too, which enable you to choose an alternative mattress firmness for your partner. There are mattresses that have a different degree of firmness on each side (soft on one side, firm to the opposite).

The more spacious or deeper the mattress, the higher the price. Most twin mattresses cost just a few hundred dollars more than the queen size, while the king and California King sizes typically cost around $200 more than the queen size. Hybrid mattresses, luxury and premier versions generally are more expensive than the standard or original mattresses that are listed.

How can I determine the correct mattress firmness?

Medium firm is always the most popular mattress choice which is why the majority of flagship mattresses fall within a range of 7 on the firmness scale (10 is the degree of firmness).

But mattresses are also subjective. The firmness and comfort of a mattress is determined by numerous factors, including your weight and height, your body shape as well as your sleeping method, temperature and whether you are experiencing any pain, such as in your back or hips. This means that one person’s experience of an mattress will be completely different to that of a different person. Also, whether you would prefer a more soft or firmer mattress will be dependent on your personal preference.

(That’s why we employ a range of different people to evaluate our mattresses – and also the reason we read hundreds of reviews from our customers. Be aware of this when you’re evaluating our ‘firmness gauge’, that ranges from 1 to 10 10, with 10 being the most firm. You may find a mattress to be more or less firm than what we’ve observed.) But, there’s some general guidelines to help you decide which level of mattress firmness you may be most at ease with…

1. Take note of your preferred position for sleeping. Back sleepers typically benefit from a medium-firm mattress. This is the optimal of both worlds as it provides a balanced spinal alignment and helping the shoulders and hips and shoulders, but not putting too much pressure on them. If your mattress feels too firm, back sleepers could find their spine developing an uncomfortable U-shape that causes strain. If the mattress is too firm and firm, the natural curve of ‘S’ of your spine will not be supported properly.

Side sleepers require pressure relief on their hips and shoulders, and for their body’s contours to be supported. A mattress that is medium to medium soft is generally a good option. If it’s too soft however, the spine won’t align correctly with shoulders and hips. Memory foam is often the most suitable mattress option for sleepers on the side because of its superior contouring properties.

People who sleep on their sides tend to do better on a mattress that is firmer. This can help lift the hips upwards, ensuring that they are in alignment with the spine and prevents the spine from forming an ‘U. If it’s too firm it can be uncomfortable especially for women, and won’t allow the spine to naturally curve. Too soft and it can appear to be suffocating. Hybrid and innerspring mattresses may be better choices as opposed to foam mattresses for people who sleep in the front.

Combination sleepers must select in accordance with their preferred sleep position (the place you usually rest in). If you don’t already have one, a mattress that is medium firm will dish out the best comfort and support in all sleeping positions.

2. Take into consideration your body weight. lighter sleepers that weigh less than 130lbs don’t sink as far into the mattress, and could be well-suited to softer options because of this – between 2 and 4 on the firmness scale. However, a medium-firm mattress would also be a good option.

People weighing between 130-230lbs are often better-suited to medium and medium-firm mattresses, between 7 and 7 on the firmness scale.
