Helix Mattress Review Overview

Helix gained notoriety in the late 1990s as being one of the first mattress companies to provide fully customizable mattresses, which include mattresses that feature two different designs on each side to accommodate partners with differing sleeping preferences. While the company recently scaled back its customized products, it remains committed to supplying a wide selection of mattresses for sleepers.

Helix now includes six different hybrid mattress available in its range, each with a different quality of plushness and hardness. Here’s a rundown of who’s most likely to be sleeping on these mattresses (and those who may not).

Who Might Like the Helix Mattresses?

  • People who have a hot bed and require cooling mattresses
  • people who require a vast variety of choices to select from

Who Might Not Like the Helix Mattresses?

  • Those who do not want or desire coil support

Helix Mattress Firmness and Feel

You might have noticed that stiffness is already mentioned within this list. That’s because one of the most important aspects to think about when purchasing the best mattress is its firmness (and how it affects comfort). These elements will reveal the mattress’s suitability for your chosen sleep location (s). Let’s take a closer look at the comfort and firmness in the Helix mattress collection.

What Is the Firmness of Helix Mattresses?

The Helix mattresses come in a wide range of choices, with the softer being moderately soft and the most firm ones being moderately firm. The Helix Sunset is on the soft side of the spectrum We have given it a rating at 5.5 /10 on the firmness scale. (A 6.5/10 would be the standard industry norm for moderate firmness.) Helix Dusk is next. Helix Midnight is next, and we gave it a 6/10 which means that it’s less firm than average. The Helix Midnight as well as the Helix Dusk are between the spectrum. Both of these mattresses have a score of 7/10 which is slightly more firm than the average. They are Helix Twilight, as well as Helix Dawn are at the more difficult side of the spectrum, both receiving an 7.5/10 score (firmer than average).

It is important to keep in mind that the level of hardness is a matter of personal preference. If you’re looking for the firmness of the mattress, you can rate these mattresses differently depending on your body weight and your personal preferences. People who are heavier, for instance, may find these mattresses more firm because they are able to press further into the mattress to reach the support layers. However, those who are lighter may be surprised to find these mattresses softer since they are higher on the comfort level of every bed(s).

Sleeping on the Helix Mattresses

We slept on the Helix mattresses for a lengthy period of time in order to gain an idea of what it’s like to sleep on each model in various positions. Check out what we found!

Helix Sunset Mattress

Helix Birch Organic MattressDue to its softness because of its softness, Helix Sunset was not sufficient for back sleepers. Our hips were a bit too deeply down into our mattress which caused the spine to shift.

While the Helix Sunset’s softness isn’t ideal for back sleepers but it’s great for those who prefer to sleep sideways. We felt very comfortable in this position because the mattress’s softness cushioned any tension points in the hip and shoulder. It’s actually one of the greatest mattresses to relieve hip discomfort we’ve seen.

The Helix Sunset is not supportive enough for stomach sleep due to its softness. Our hips were too deep into the mattress which pulled our back out of position, just like they did when we were sleeping back to back.

Helix Moonlight Mattress

helix-moonlightAs a back sleeper while sleeping, it was apparent that the Helix Moonlight was adequate but not outstanding. If you’re planning on sleeping in this position all night, you’ll probably want a firmer mattress that offers extra support and aids in maintaining an appropriate spine alignment.

It is the Helix Moonlight is an excellent option for sleeping on the side because of its comfort. There was no unwelcome pressure around the shoulder or hip.

The Helix Moonlight, like the Helix Sunset, is not sufficient for stomach sleep. Our hips sank too deeply into the mattress, causing the spine to shift.

Helix Midnight Mattress

Helix Midnight Luxe FeatureAs we slept in the Helix Midnight and feeling fantastic, we were able to feel great. We experienced a bit of pressure relief without sacrificing spine alignment due to the mattress’s excellent blend of comfort and support. It’s the best mattress for those who sleep on their backs on this list.

Even though the Helix Midnight is firmer than it’s counterparts, the Helix Sunset or Moonlight, we discovered it to be comfortable to sleep on our sides on this mattress. It is a good pressure-relief mattress on the hip and shoulder, in our opinion.

When we slept with our stomachs on the Helix Midnight, we were well, but not super. People who sleep in this position all night should look for a firmer mattress that provides greater spinal support.

Helix Dusk Mattress

helix-duskIt’s the Helix Dusk is more supportive than other models that we’ve tested. This could explain why we felt so at ease while sleeping in our backs. We’re certain that we’ll enjoy an ideal spinal alignment throughout the night because of the mattress’s supportive nature.

It’s probably not surprising it is that Helix Dusk feels a little too soft for sleeping on your side considering that we’ve moved to the firmer side of the spectrum. There was some discomfort around the shoulder and hip that would cause significant discomfort if you sleep in this position for the entire night.

The Helix Dusk should suit stomach sleepers with a normal weight because it will help to maintain a healthy spinal alignment. However, heavier stomach sleepers may not receive enough support here.

Helix Twilight Mattress

helix-twilightThe Helix Twilight was proved to be the greatest bed for back pain. It’s the ideal mattress for back sleepers who require additional support owing to weight gain or back pain, as well as other factors. The more firm construction of this mattress assists in keeping the hips lifted and in alignment to the spinal column.

Since it is the case that Helix Twilight is more firm than the average mattress We found it hard to lay on our backs on the mattress. We felt suffocated in the hips and shoulders.

Most stomach sleepers should find the Helix Twilight mattress to be an ideal one, as the mattress’ hardness should provide enough of spinal support for this type of position.

Helix Dawn Mattress

helix-dawnBack sleepers who prefer an extra firm mattress will love the Helix Dawn’s superior level of support. However, those who like a little pressure alleviation when resting on their backs could find this mattress too firm.

The Helix Dawn is far too difficult to sleep on side and you’ll be left with lots of pressure points in your hips and shoulders. One of the softer types will be considerably better for side sleepers.

The Helix Dawn mattress is considered to be the most comfortable mattress for stomach sleepers, in our view. Throughout the night this supportive and firm mattress keeps the hips raised and aligned with the spine.

What Do the Helix Mattresses Feel Like?

Helix mattresses all have a hybrid composition with foam layered over coils. Despite these commonalities however, each model has its own distinct personality.

The Helix Sunset offers a soft top and a balanced foam feel. The soft comfort layer allows sleepers to feel comfortable and creates a slow-moving feel.

The Helix Moonlight, despite its softness, has a bouncy sensation, particularly when compared with the Sunset, which is less sensitive.

The Helix Midnight similar to Helix Sunset, like Helix Sunset, offers an even feel and smooth top layer that moves slowly. The Midnight is a bit more firm than the Sunset which allows sleepers to sink deeper into the top layer.

The Helix Dusk is solid and bouncy. This is because of the use of dynamic foam on the upper layer as well as coils in the supporting layer.

It is similar to the Helix Twilight, like the Helix Sunset and Midnight, features a slower-moving top. This is still a firm mattress even though the comfort layer is slightly more comfortable.

Helix Dawn, like the Helix Dawn, like the Helix Dusk, has a firm, bouncy feel to it because of the use of dynamic foam (in the comfort layer) and coils (in the support layer).

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs

The Helix Midnight (which combines spinal support and pressure reduction) as well as The Helix Dusk are likely to be the preferred choice for back sleepers (which gives a firmer spinal support).

The Helix Midnight (if your preference is a slightly harder sensation) or the softer and more pressure-relieving Helix Moonlight and Sunset are more likely for average-weight side sleepers.

For stomach sleepers, those with a moderate weight should choose the supportive Helix Twilight or Dawn.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs

The Helix Dusk should provide appropriate support for back sleepers who weigh a lot since it alleviates pressure and maintains spinal alignment.

The most soft models of the Helix range, such as Helix Moonlight or Helix Moonlight or Helix Sunset, should provide sufficient of pressure relief for heavyweight side sleepers.

The stomach sleepers who are heavy, on the other hand, will most likely go towards Helix Dawn. Helix Dawn (the firmest mattress of the range) for the best spinal support.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs

There ought to be a range of models for light back sleepers. For instance, the Helix Moonlight, Midnight, and Dusk all offer plenty of spinal support as well as different levels of pressure relief to suit various sleeping styles.

Similar to the side sleepers that are lightweight, you can pick from the Helix Midnight, Moonlight, or Sunset that should all give adequate pressure relief and allow users to adjust the hardness level to their requirements.

Finally stomach sleepers will discover Helix Twilight or Dawn to be the most supportive. Helix Twilight and Dawn as the most supportive.

Helix Mattresses Construction

As far as construction is concerned, each of the Helix mattresses are constructed in the same manner: They have the same cover, and the same foam comfort layers are placed over individual supports for coils.

All Helix mattresses, including the newest models, come with the SoftTouch Design cover that is soft, elastic, and air-tight. The design lets air flow freely across the mattress’s top. In addition, every Helix model comes with an extra layer of support that is made of individually wrapped coils that are stacked over a high-density base foam which provides the mattress with it’s overall design and support.

The similarities end there for the most part. The comfort layers of these mattresses vary in thickness, stiffness, arrangement and the types of foam. There are additional materials available in certain models. Let’s look at it more closely!.

Helix Sunset

Its cushion of comfort is comprised of pressure-reducing Memory Plus Foam, which provides the slow-moving, comfortable feel that memory foam is famous for. A layer of transition made up from Helix Dynamic foam, a latex-foam replacement that’s more firm, bouncier and more supportive, is placed beneath the Memory Plus Foam.

Helix Moonlight

While the Helix Sunset’s top layer of comfort is composed out of Memory Plus Foam, the Helix Midnight’s primary comfort layer and transition layer is made of Helix Dynamic Foam. This is another latex-foam option and the numerous layers of this foam gives it a buoyant feeling when compared to the Helix Sunset.

Helix Midnight

Memory Plus Foam is the primary comfort layer of the Helix Midnight, and it provides pressure reduction and body shaping. A transition layer of dense, high-grade polyfoam sits underneath it. Memory Plus Foam. This layer is quite flexible, meaning that the mattress overall responds more quickly to pressure.

Helix Dusk

The main comfort layer is made up of Helix Dynamic Foam, a latex-foam replacement that’s soft and receptive. A layer of Memory Plus Foam sits beneath this layer. (Think about the Dusk’s construction as similar to that in that of the Helix Sunset, but reversed.) Helix Dynamic Foam is placed over Memory Plus Foam to create a lively, responsive surface, while Memory Plus Foam provides pressure relief as sleepers sink into the mattress.

Helix Twilight

Helix Twilight, like the Helix Twilight, like the Helix Midnight, has a slow-moving Memory Plus Foam layer above an extremely dense and high-grade polyfoam transition layer. The Memory Plus Foam adds some comfort, but don’t be deceived by this being an extremely firm mattress that has very less give.

Helix Dawn

Last but not least The Helix Dawn comes with an Helix Comfort Layer made of Dynamic Foam that is layered over a dense, high-grade polyfoam layer transition layer. The result is an extremely firm, bouncey, and supple sleep surface that has very minimal give.

Helix Mattresses Performance

We put our Helix mattress through a series of tests to determine their performance in key areas like temperature regulation as well as edge support, motion transfer and more. Read on to learn what they did!

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Do you feel hot or cold when sleeping? If you’re worried about overheating, consider purchasing a LUXE version of any mattress.

Motion Transfer

Based on our testing, some models outperform other models when it comes to minimising disturbances to your mattress’s top. For instance, the Helix Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight provided the best motion isolation. This is due to the slower-moving memory foam near the top of each of the models, which do well at blocking motion. These are among the best mattresses for couples that are available on the market.

Edge Support

Each Helix mattress had an excellent edge support across the board. As we sat and fell asleep at the edge of each mattress, we felt secure.

Durability

All of the Helix mattresses are constructed with high-density foams and robust coils, ensuring that they will endure a long duration.

Off-Gassing

We did notice an off-gassing issue from the six Helix mattresses in the beginning. The issue will be gone within a couple of days, in the event that it is not earlier.

Noise

We didn’t notice any noticeable noise when we moved around on any of these mattresses at the time of our test. But, since all of them have coils, it’s likely that they’ll begin to make noise with time.

Sex

When searching for a sex mattress, a majority of people are concerned about how easy it will be to shift positions on the bed. Since all Helix mattresses have coils, they must be responsive enough to allow you to move around easily on any of them. The models with memory foam on their top layers (particularly the Helix Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight) may make changing positions harder due to their slower motion.

Information on the Warranty

A 100-night sleep trial and 10 years of mattress warranty come with every Helix mattress.
